Aluminum facade and profiles: Low maintenance + Sustainable
Low-Maintenance + Sustainable Solution
Combination of SANDALOR® Aluminum Facade + Powder-Coated Window Profiles
Finding the right building material is a complex process. Many very different criteria must be considered. Today and in the future, sustainability plays an increasingly important role. While issues such as recyclability or recyclability percentage are easy to assess technically, later deconstruction is not something a building owner typically considers during the planning phase. A more interesting question for a building owner is how the building material will behave over time. Warranties promise a technical service life – but what about its visual properties?
Aluminum Facade in Blue Anodised Finish S150-1
The architect couple Rössler consciously chose an anodised facade for their private residence 15 years ago and say the following about it today:
„Due to the high metal content of the building, the new building already 'automatically' has a high proportion of recycled material." During dismantling, the structure can be disassembled almost exactly as it was assembled, automatically sorting itself into high-quality components that are also economically viable to recycle. This has always been standard practice with metals.
The aluminum facade continues to impress with its extremely low maintenance requirements. It has been exposed to the elements for years without showing any noticeable signs of aging. It is easy to clean and, thanks to its suspended construction, can even be easily inspected or repaired if necessary. A quality-assured surface finish on the aluminum sheets ensures consistent colour even when facade elements are replaced. Regardless of the chosen colour, the anodising process creates a shimmering interplay of colours with an optical depth effect, depending on the position of the sun and the intensity of the light.“
Besides durability and low maintenance, it is primarily the unique visual properties that make anodised aluminum surfaces an authentic building material. Classic colours like natural silver, gold, or bronze are highly adaptable and harmonize perfectly with other materials. The SANDALOR® colour palette offers very vibrant hues that nevertheless appear timelessly modern (see the Rössler example). In contrast, the new GRANODAL® colours are very subtle and elegant, and their high-quality grey appearance offers outstanding design possibilities.

What makes an aluminum facade sustainable?
Design options
- Aluminum sheets and profiles can be easily shaped using profile and sheet processing techniques.
- The low weight offers design flexibility in terms of structural integrity, installation, and applications.
- Aluminum can be anodised.
- Anodised surfaces retain their authentic metallic appearance.
- Different surface textures provide varying reflective properties, allowing for customization through brushing, grinding, polishing, or pickling.
- Anodised surfaces offer a wide range of unique, anodised-specific colour options, such as gold, bronze, grey (GRANODAL®), or coloured anodising with SANDALOR®.
- Sheets and profiles can be designed as a unified whole.
Technical Properties
- Excellent forming properties through extrusion, a wide variety of sheet metals, machining by sawing, milling, drilling, etc.
- Weather-resistant
- Corrosion-resistant
- Hard surfaces are insensitive to mechanical stress
- Low weight
- High stability
- Extremely low maintenance
- Easy to clean
Sustainability
- Technically durable - corrosion-resistant - aluminum windows, facades, etc., are still functional in our own buildings after 50 years.
- Visually durable - aluminum surfaces are subject to normal soiling - otherwise, aluminum surfaces remain visually appealing even after many years.
- If the components do need to be replaced (e.g., for energy-efficient window renovations), dismantling is straightforward, and the components can be 100% recycled.
- Aluminum is a valuable material that can be easily recycled with only 5% energy expenditure (source: aluminiumdeutschland).
