A variety of materials and colours in an apartment house

A special project was completed in Koblenz in 2025. The old two-storey residential building, dating from 1898, was extended by two storeys and an attic. Renovating existing buildings is much more than just a technical challenge. In the combination of old and new, the materials, colours and finishes used offer the architect unique design possibilities. The old stone façade meets aluminium, wood, zinc sheet and modern glass surfaces.

Surface to the power of4

  1. E6 EV2, matt gold anodised façade panels combine with the sand-coloured bricks to form a uniform façade surface

  2. High-quality, polished, brown-gold aluminium elements form a double visual 'bracket'. All windows on the street-facing side of both the old and new buildings gleam, just like the struts of the balcony railings, in a warm Sandalor® Gold S120-2. And the shade blends discreetly with the colour of the red brickwork.

  3. In the attic, the zinc sheets extend from the roof down to the balconies and are visible from the street. The zinc-grey colour extends across the entire roof surface to the rear. Here, both the windows and the balconies are finished in GRANODAL® C-71 anodised grey. Here too, the matt anodised surface blends perfectly with both the roof cladding and the warm wood colour of the balcony ceilings and wooden floors.

  4. The windows on the courtyard side feature a matt white powder-coated finish on the inside, thus echoing the contrast between the white walls and the grey structural elements on the exterior.

The client and the architect have thus achieved something that was hard to imagine: combining old and new, stone, glass, wood, zinc sheet and aluminium, façade and windows, roof and wall surfaces, large areas and fine textures, and around 10 different colours, textures and finishes into a harmonious whole, the quality of which is only revealed upon closer inspection.
